What is Pyjamarama?
Pyjamarama is a fun day for schools, nurseries, preschools and home settings to celebrate reading whilst raising money to help give every child in the UK the chance to have a bedtime story. It’s a hugely popular and enjoyable event for all those taking part, but it also provides an opportunity for children to experience the joy and confidence that books can bring to their lives.
'Pyjamarama' was the first single to be recorded at AIR Studios in London, the same location where Roxy Music later cut For Your Pleasure (1973), Stranded (1973), Country Life (1974) and Siren (1975). Featuring Bryan Ferry on vocals, his distinctive, upbeat sound and clever wordplay presented a nuanced portrayal of love and the pursuit of happiness.
The song enjoyed some staying power, spending 12 weeks in the chart. It is considered one of Roxy Music's finest works, and an important part of the band's oeuvre.
Each year the charity BookTrust holds a Pyjamarama week in homes, schools, nurseries and preschools across the UK. The idea is to dress children in their pyjamas for the day and raise funds so that they can provide children who live in poverty with the chance of having their own bedtime story.
When teachers register a setting for this event they will receive a free downloadable fundraising pack which includes activity resources, information and posters to use ahead of the Friday 16th June event date. Those who sign up can also access the Pyjamarama Hub where there are additional activity ideas and resources to help them get the most from their day.
